Is a husband obligated to cover the medical expenses of his wife, whether for an acute or chronic illness, or if she desires to conceive and faces difficulties in doing so? And if not legally obligated, what should a woman do who has no money and whose husband does not provide her with money if she falls ill and wishes to seek treatment?

The majority of jurists from the four schools of thought are of the view that the husband is not obligated to cover his wife's medical expenses, basing their argument on the fact that such expenses are not among the customary necessities but rather are unforeseen, as stated by Imam Al-Shafi'i and others.

However, some contemporary scholars, such as Dr. Wahbah Al-Zuhayli and Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Hamad, believe that the husband is obligated to cover medical expenses, considering it part of living together honorably (al-mu'asharah bi'l-ma'ruf) and that the need for medical treatment in the modern era has become as essential as the need for food and drink. Furthermore, the Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas indicated that while the expense is not obligatory, it is an act of recommended kindness and benevolence.
