Are medical bills in the wife's name considered a debt owed by her, and who is responsible for paying them if she is unable to do so and the husband refuses?

The physician's fee and the cost of medication are not obligatory upon the husband for his wife, nor are they included in the obligatory maintenance according to the agreement of the four madhhabs. As for the midwife's fee, jurists have differed on it. The Hanafi madhhab holds that it is incumbent upon whoever hired her. The well-known opinion among the Malikis is that the midwife's fee is obligatory upon the husband. The Shafi'is believe that the midwife's fee related to the care of the child is incumbent upon the father. Therefore, invoices related to treatments outside of childbirth are incumbent upon the wife, unless the husband voluntarily pays them. However, invoices related to childbirth are incumbent upon the husband.
