What is the ruling on swearing by the Holy Qur'an?

Swearing by the Qur'an is a binding oath according to the majority of scholars, because it is the word of Allah, and thus an oath by one of His attributes. However, the Hanafis hold that it is not an oath due to the lack of common practice of swearing by it. But their later scholars believe that the oath is binding now due to the common practice of swearing by it. The truth is that it is permissible to swear by any of Allah's names and attributes.
