When do reckoning and torment take place: is it after death or on the Day of Resurrection, especially given the existence of evidence indicating their occurrence before the Day of Resurrection, such as the Prophet's—may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him—vision of those being tormented during the journey of Isra and Mi'raj, and Ibn al-Jawzi's vision of one of his teachers being held accountable?

Punishment occurs in the grave before the Day of Judgment, and some of it in the Hereafter. The verses that interpret these two types of punishment are the Almighty's saying: "And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will return," and His saying: "And there encompassed the people of Pharaoh the worst of punishment – The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], 'Admit the people of Pharaoh to the severest punishment.'" As for accountability (Hisab), it takes place on the Day of Judgment, due to His saying: "Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will have an easy reckoning," and His saying: "And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, and no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as reckoners."
