Is it permissible for a woman traveling by plane at night during Ramadan to break her fast, or is it obligatory, or is it recommended?

The night is not a time for fasting. If the questioner will be traveling for part of the day, she has the concession of travel. If she will reside in the destination country for four days or more, she is considered a resident and cannot avail herself of the travel concessions. However, if the stay is less than four days, she is considered a traveler and is permitted to break her fast, shorten her prayers (qasr), and combine them (jam‘). A traveler who is not harmed by fasting has the choice between breaking the fast and fasting, based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying to Hamzah ibn ‘Amr Al-Aslami: "It is a concession from Allah Almighty; whoever takes it, it is good, and whoever wishes to fast, there is no blame upon him."
