If a traveler intended to fast at night and then traveled during the day, is he permitted to break his fast?

It is permissible for a fasting person to break their fast if they travel during the day. This is the view of Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him. This is supported by the Qur'an and the Sunnah. From the Qur'an, Allah says: "And whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days" (Al-Baqarah/185). Whoever travels during the day is "on a journey," so they are permitted to break their fast and avail themselves of the concessions for travel. From the Sunnah, Abu Dawud narrated from Ubayd ibn Jabr, who said: I sailed with Abu Basrah Al-Ghifari in a ship during Ramadan. When we departed from our anchorage, he ordered his food mat to be brought close, then he said: "Come closer." I said: "Do we not see the houses [still]?" So Abu Basrah said: "Have you turned away from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" The statement of a Companion regarding the Sunnah refers to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

However, he is not permitted to break his fast until he begins his journey and leaves his town. It is not permissible for him to break his fast while he is still in his town.
