Is it permissible to seek intercession from the prophets on the Day of Resurrection, given that seeking intercession from other than Allah is major polytheism (shirk akbar)? And is it permissible for a Muslim to hope for the intercession of Prophet Muhammad on the Day of Resurrection without seeking it from him in this world? And did the Companions seek intercession from the Prophet during his lifetime?

Intercession belongs to Allah alone, and it is not permissible to seek it from any created being, even if he be a messenger prophet. Seeking intercession from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after his death is not legislated and may even be polytheistic (shirk). As for seeking intercession from the prophets on the Day of Resurrection, its meaning is to ask the prophets to supplicate to Allah Almighty to judge between His servants. The believer strives to attain the intercession of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on the Day of Resurrection through supplication and righteous deeds. The happiest person to receive his intercession is he who says "La ilaha illa Allah" (There is no god but Allah) sincerely from his heart, and he who says after the call to prayer (Adhan): "O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad Al-Wasilah and Al-Fadilah, and raise him to the praised station that You promised him." For such a person, his intercession becomes due on the Day of Resurrection.
