What are the duties and prohibitions of eating? And is eating among the things that are obligatory for a person?

Eating from what is directly in front of you is a Sunnah, not an obligation, and it is disliked to abandon it. Some scholars have restricted this Sunnah to instances where one eats with a group or when the food is of a uniform type. Some scholars have made eating with the right hand obligatory and prohibited eating with the left, while the majority view it as a Sunnah. Similarly, some scholars have made uttering the Basmalah at the beginning of the meal obligatory, while the majority consider it a Sunnah. It is obligatory to ensure one's food is good and from lawful sources. It is forbidden to take anything from the food without the owner's permission. Some scholars have prohibited finding fault with food and eating until satiety.
