Is it permissible to pray the two rak'ahs of Tawaf outside the Mataf area?

It is sunnah to pray two rak'ahs after every circumambulation (tawaf). It is preferable for them to be performed behind Maqam Ibrahim (Station of Abraham), and it is permissible to perform them anywhere in the Grand Mosque or in all of Mecca. Scholars have unanimously agreed on the permissibility of performing the two rak'ahs of tawaf anywhere, except for Malik, who disliked performing them in the Hijr (the semi-circular wall adjacent to the Kaaba). Scholars emphasize that it is not obligatory for the circumambulator to pray behind Maqam Ibrahim if doing so leads to overcrowding and disturbing other circumambulators. Rather, it is prescribed for him to move away from the crowd and pray anywhere else in the Mosque or the Haram, because overcrowding may be a reason to move to a farther place. In summary, it is best to perform the two rak'ahs behind the Maqam if there is no crowding or disturbance to people.
