What should a Muslim who lied to the French authorities to seek political asylum, while not suffering from any problems in his home country, do to repent for his lie?
It is not permissible for a Muslim to reside in or emigrate to the lands of the disbelievers except in cases of extreme necessity, based on the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "I am free of any Muslim who resides among the polytheists." This is due to the corruption and loss of religion that result from residing there. Scholars have permitted travel to their lands for the purpose of inviting to Allah or seeking necessary knowledge, provided there is security from temptation and a return upon the completion of the need. Therefore, the emigration of the brother mentioned to a disbelieving country is not permissible, and undoubtedly his sin is greater if it involves fraud and lying. He is advised to return to his country to preserve his religion.
