Is what I am doing forbidden for me or for the one who looks at me?

Displaying oneself (tabarruj) is a major sin, forbidden, and reprehensible. It is a characteristic of the women of pre-Islamic ignorance (Jahiliyyah) and the hypocrites, and a cause for entering Hellfire. Allah the Almighty says: "And do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against women who display themselves, describing them as the worst of women, and stating that very few of them will enter Paradise. He also mentioned that among the people of Hellfire are "women who are clothed yet naked, inclining [to evil] and themselves inclined." The meaning of "clothed yet naked" has several interpretations, including: wearing thin clothes that describe their bodies, or covering some parts of the body while exposing others, or clothed in garments but naked of piety. The sin falls upon the woman who displays herself for violating Allah's boundaries and for being a cause of temptation, and upon the beholder for not lowering his gaze.
