What is the soundest Islamic opinion for determining the first days of fasting, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha for Muslim students in the city of Mysore, India, given the local and regional differences in determining Eids? To overcome this, one must act according to what the Sharia (definition) has prescribed, which is to confirm the start of the month by sighting the crescent moon, or by completing Sha'ban with thirty days if sighting is not possible. If the community seeks to sight the crescent moon with their own eyes, then you must fast if its sighting is confirmed by the report of a reliable witness, and do not pay attention to another country. If the crescent moon is not sighted where you are, then complete Sha'ban with thirty days, and do not fast based on the sighting of another country that differs from you in moonrise. If the community relies on astronomical calculations, then you must endeavor to sight the crescent moon yourselves. If you are unable to do so, then fast with the closest country to you that seeks to sight the crescent moon. As for fasting with a city that relies on astronomy, it is contrary to the Sharia. Fasting with the closest country, like Pakistan, is permissible if there is no committee that seeks to sight the crescent moon where you are, and you yourselves cannot sight it, and Pakistan does seek to sight the crescent moon. Fasting with Saudi Arabia is permissible if sighting the crescent moon is difficult for you, and there is no committee or neighboring country that seeks to sight it, taking into account the opinion of those who say: if the people of one country sight it, all people must fast. As for fasting with one's country of origin, this is an innovation that further complicates and divides the matter.
