The fundamental principle is equality in religious obligations between men and women, except that the financial expenditures obligatory upon men are greater than those upon women. Financial maintenance (nafaqa) is obligatory upon a wealthy woman in specific cases, including: her maintenance of herself if she is unmarried and possesses wealth, and her maintenance of her child in the event of the father's death, his insolvency, or his refusal to provide maintenance, with a difference of opinion regarding her recourse to the husband in some cases. Likewise, she is obliged to provide maintenance for her indigent parents.
