is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory upon every Muslim who owns the and upon whose wealth a hawl (one lunar year) has passed, if the wealth is in cash, trade goods, or livestock. As for agricultural produce, its zakat is due at the time of harvest. It is not a condition for its obligation that a person be married; rather, it is obligatory upon both the married and the unmarried, and also on the wealth of a child.
The nisab for gold is 85 grams, and for silver is 595 grams, or their equivalent in banknotes. Whoever owns this amount or more, and a hawl has passed on it, must pay two and a half percent (2.5%) of it, whether the wealth was acquired through a gift, Eidiyah (Eid gift), a grant, or work.
