How can a Muslim who lacks self-confidence overcome their irritability when speaking with others?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Self-confidence is an acquired trait that a Muslim needs to learn how to attain. A distinction must be made between self-confidence and arrogance. Confidence means recognizing and acting upon the good qualities bestowed upon you by Allah, whereas arrogance and conceit are destructive ailments. A Muslim's self-confidence does not mean they do not need Allah Almighty or other people; rather, they must not be left to themselves for the blink of an eye. Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen affirmed that self-confidence, in the sense of certainty and conviction, does not contradict the supplication, "And do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye." The strong believer is more beloved to Allah than the weak one, and he should be keen on what benefits him and seek help from Allah. A Muslim's self-confidence increases with their trust in their Lord and reliance on Him, by seeking out and developing their strengths, addressing their weaknesses, avoiding discouraging words, setting and reviewing specific goals, being keen on good companionship, and not dwelling on past failed experiences. A Muslim's control over their actions and behaviors, such as anger, enhances their self-confidence and their ability to purify and refine themselves.
