What is the ruling concerning a Muslim woman who says, "I love so-and-so from among men like my son, and I cannot deny my love for him"? And what is the ruling concerning one who says, "Allah knows best what is in my heart," while insisting on speaking with non-mahrams and referring to them as "my sons"?

Love between a man and a woman who are not mahram falls into categories: Lawful love for his righteousness and piety, which is praiseworthy. Love out of mercy and compassion, which is not forbidden. And lustful love, which, if it is not by choice, carries no sin unless it leads to dereliction of duty or falling into something unlawful. Love is forbidden if its cause is unlawful, such as gazing or speaking, or if it leads to falling into something unlawful. As for a woman speaking with a man who is not mahram, it is prohibited except for a legitimate need and without softening her voice. It is not permissible for a woman to speak with men who are not mahram without need, thinking that her intention is pure, and that is to prevent temptation and block the means (to evil).
