What is the authenticity of the hadith or story that says the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered a poor man working for wages to reduce his wage until it was sufficient for him?

A severe warning has been established for whoever hires a worker and does not give him his right despite being able to do so. This includes what Al-Bukhari narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah said: 'There are three whose opponent I will be on the Day of Resurrection: a man who gave a promise by Me and then broke it; a man who sold a free person [as a slave] and consumed his price; and a man who hired a worker, received full service from him, but did not pay him his wages.'" As for what has been attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, beyond this, we have not found it.
