What is the ruling on returning to Facebook after swearing an oath to Allah to abandon it, and is expiation for breaking an oath obligatory?
The legal ruling for using Facebook is as follows: if the usage is for permissible and good purposes, there is no objection; rather, the user may even be rewarded for it. However, if the usage is for disliked or forbidden purposes, the ruling ranges between disliking (makrooh) and prohibition (haraam).
- If the questioner swore and covenanted with Allah to abandon Facebook due to its impermissible use, then it is not permissible for him to go back on his oath. - However, if the questioner's use of Facebook is for good and beneficial purposes in his religion or worldly life, then he is permitted to atone for his oath. - The expiation for an oath is to feed ten poor persons from the average food given to one's family, or to clothe them, or to free a slave. If one is unable to do these three, then by fasting three days.
