What are the practical ways to achieve the contemplation (tadabbur) about which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "An hour of contemplation is better than a year of worship"?
The Hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "An hour's contemplation is better than sixty years of worship" is a fabricated hadith.
However, it is authentically reported on the authority of Abu al-Darda', as his own saying (mawquf): "An hour's contemplation is better than a night of standing in prayer," and it is also authentically reported from Al-Hasan Al-Basri.
Contemplation and reflection instill in the servant various forms of servitude to Allah and immense benefits in their religion. They may even surpass some apparent acts of worship, because they are among the acts of worship of the heart, which are the foundation of the acts of worship of the limbs.
Contemplation should be directed towards Allah's legislative verses (the Quran) and cosmic verses (the creation of the heavens and the earth and what is in them). It calls for an increase in faith and obedience, and for recognizing the greatness of the Creator and His attributes.
Contemplation of the Quran is meditating on its meanings, and it is the key to knowledge and insights. Through it, faith increases.
A small amount of reading with contemplation is better than a large amount without contemplation, as stated by the Companions and reported from Ahmad.
Praiseworthy contemplation is the heart's humility before Allah by pondering His legislative and cosmic verses and acting according to their implications.
Contemplation is a mirror through which you see your good deeds and your bad deeds. It is a guide on the path to Paradise. It necessitates the unveiling of the realities of matters and distinguishing their ranks. It calls for doing good and deters from evil.
