If it is possible to take precautions, then washing is obligatory. Otherwise, the obligation of washing is waived. Then, scholars differed on whether he should be given tayammum (dry ablution) or not. The majority of scholars held that he should be given tayammum, while others held that he should not be given tayammum because the purpose of ghusl (washing) is purification, not ritual purity from ritual impurity. This is the more preponderant opinion. If washing, tayammum, and removing the clothes are not possible, then the prayer should be performed over him as he is, and this is the view of the Hanbalis.
