Imam Malik does not consider Al-Fatihah to be six verses; rather, he considers it to be seven verses, and the Basmalah (Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm) is not one of its verses. The seventh verse, according to him, is: "Ghayri l-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa-lāḍ-ḍāllīn" (not of those who have incurred [Your] wrath or of those who are astray). However, in the Meccan and Kufan Qur'anic manuscripts, the Basmalah is a verse of Al-Fatihah, and the seventh verse begins with the words: "Ṣirāṭa l-ladhīna..." (the path of those...).
