What is the answer to the specious argument that the weak are prohibited from defending themselves when incapable, citing the patience of the Companions in enduring the harm of the polytheists before the Hijra?

The victim is either capable of defending himself, which is his legitimate and natural right, and no one prevents him from it. Or he is incapable, in which case he is excused by Islamic law and is not burdened with what he cannot bear. The weak in Mecca were commanded to be patient due to their inability, but the capable were not prevented by Islamic law from seeking victory and defending themselves. Indeed, Allah praised those who sought victory after being wronged, saying: "And as for those who defend themselves after being wronged, for them there is no cause [for blame]." The absence of a general permission for fighting in Mecca did not prevent individuals from defending themselves, their property, and their honor if they were able.
