The question

Is Zakat al-Fitr obligatory on the amount of debt that came into the debtor's possession after the creditor refused to receive it in one lump sum and requested it in installments? And is zakat obligatory on another amount that came to him later, and he does not remember whether a hawl (lunar year) has passed on it or not?

The answer

Zakat is of two types: Zakat on wealth and Zakat on bodies (Zakat al-Fitr).

Zakat on Wealth:

- The debt you owe is not subject to Zakat by you, but by its owner, if a full year (hawl) has passed over it and it reaches the nisab. However, if the debtor is insolvent, it is not obligatory upon its owner until he receives it, whereupon he pays Zakat for one year. - The nisab: An amount equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. - The obligatory amount: A quarter of a tenth (2.5%). - Whoever is in doubt about the hawl should investigate and act on the side of caution.

Zakat on Bodies (Zakat al-Fitr):

- It becomes obligatory upon a person and those he supports at sunset on the last day of Ramadan. - Whoever dies before sunset or is born after it is not obligated to pay it. However, it is preferable to pay it for the fetus. - It is obligatory upon the old and the young, male and female, free and enslaved among Muslims. - A man pays it for himself and for those whose maintenance is his responsibility (such as his wife and children); based on the hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Prophet (peace be upon him) obligated Zakat al-Fitr upon the young and the old, and the female from those whom you maintain." - The amount: One sa' of the staple food of the people of the land (approximately 2.40 kg).
