What is the correct description of Umrah for a woman, including everything related to it from the beginning to the end of Umrah, with a clarification of what is recommended, permissible, and forbidden in each pillar of Umrah?
To perform 'Umrah, it is sunnah for a woman to perform ghusl (ritual bath) for ihram, even if she is menstruating or in postpartum bleeding. She may wear any clothing she wishes, except for clothes that are adornative, or a niqab (face veil) or gloves. It is preferable for her to enter into ihram after an obligatory prayer, or otherwise, after two rak'ahs of the sunnah prayer for ihram. Then, she should begin her talbiyah saying: "Labbaik Allahumma bi-'Umrah" (Here I am, O Allah, for 'Umrah), and she should repeat the talbiyah frequently in a low voice. If she fears an impediment, she should stipulate by saying: "Wa in habasani habisun famahilli haithu habastani" (And if an impediment prevents me, then my place of release is where You have prevented me). Upon reaching the Sacred Mosque, she should enter with her right foot, saying: "Bismillah wa as-salatu wa as-salamu 'ala Rasulillah, Allahumma ighfir li dhunubi wa iftah li abwaba rahmatik, a'udhu billahi al-'Azeem..." (In the name of Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, forgive my sins and open for me the gates of Your mercy. I seek refuge in Allah, the Almighty...). Then she should proceed to the Black Stone and perform seven circuits of circumambulation (tawaf) without ramal (fast pacing), while frequently engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and du'a (supplication). The best supplication to say between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone is: "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar" (Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire). She must be in a state of ritual purity during the tawaf. After tawaf, she should pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible, otherwise in any place in the Mosque. Then she should perform seven circuits of Sa'i (walking) between Safa and Marwah, starting with Safa, without ascending on them or performing intense running between the two green markers. After Sa'i, she should shorten her hair, and with that, her 'Umrah is complete.
A woman differs from a man in 'Umrah in the following ways: She is commanded to wear stitched, covering clothes, and is addressed to lower her voice in talbiyah. She is forbidden from performing ramal (fast pacing) and idtiba' (uncovering the right shoulder) during tawaf, and she walks at her ease. It is preferable for her to perform tawaf at night, and not to approach the Kaaba closely during tawaf when men are present. She walks the entire distance between Safa and Marwah without intense running, and does not ascend on them. Shortening her hair is better for her than shaving, unlike a man.
