What is the recompense for a wife who ceases to serve her husband and children, and deliberately hits them during disputes to anger her husband, and what is the solution to this problem after repeated advice?
A wife's service to her husband is obligatory, and if a dispute arises between the spouses, this obligation does not fall away from her, nor does it permit her to assault her children to provoke her husband. Rather, she must obey her husband and raise her children, and resolve the problem through other means. The disloyalty (nushuz) of a wife requires the husband to follow the legitimate steps mentioned in the Holy Qur’an, which are admonition, then abandonment in bed, then non-violent striking. If the disloyalty persists, he may be patient with her, or divorce her, or refer the matter to the ruler, or send two arbiters to consider the case.
