Is it permissible for an elderly woman whose husband has passed away to move to her brother's house to observe the iddah, if her son is busy and she is compelled to go out to attend to her needs, knowing that she has already spent two weeks in her own home?

A woman whose husband has died must observe her 'iddah (waiting period) in the marital home where her husband passed away while she was there. It is forbidden for her to spend the night outside of it except in cases of necessity. 'Umar and 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them both, mandated observing the 'iddah in the home. This was also narrated from Ibn 'Umar, Ibn Mas'ud, and Umm Salamah, and it is the view of Malik, Al-Thawri, Al-Awza'i, Abu Hanifa, Al-Shafi'i, and Ishaq. Furthermore, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded Furay'ah to remain in her home and observe her 'iddah there. She is permitted to go out to fulfill her needs during the 'iddah, but she is not allowed to move to her brother's house or any other place except in cases of necessity. If she goes out without necessity, she must return to the 'iddah house, and if she does not return, she is sinful. The 'iddah concludes after the passage of four months and ten days, and she should increase her supplications for forgiveness and repentance. The 'iddah is not to be made up; if she went out without need or spent the night in a place other than her home without necessity, or abandoned the mourning (ihdad), she should seek Allah's forgiveness and repent, and there is no redoing of the 'iddah required of her.
