The answer

It is impermissible to work in the army of a state that fights Muslims, or expels them from their homes, or supports their expulsion, based on the Almighty's saying: "Allah only forbids you from those who fought you because of religion and expelled you from your homes and aided in your expulsion - that you make allies of them." However, if the nation does not fight Muslims, nor expels them, nor supports their expulsion, then it is permissible to work in its army, based on the Almighty's saying: "Allah does not forbid you from those who did not fight you because of religion and did not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly." And working for wages falls under righteousness and benevolence.
