How can one avoid the recurrence of diseases of the heart after healing, and what is the remedy for the obsessive whispers (waswas) that afflict a person when they are preoccupied and not remembering Allah?
There is no objection to a person rejoicing in their recovery from spiritual ailments or in the acceptance of their repentance. Joy at attaining what is beloved and desired is natural, and the most deserving cause for joy is the grace and mercy of Allah, which encompass guidance and the healing of hearts.
If spiritual ailments or sins return after repentance, one must hasten to repent from them again, for the children of Adam are prone to error, and the best of them are those who repent frequently. The repentance of the penitent is not invalidated by a return to sin if it had fulfilled its conditions, the most important of which is not intending to return to the sin at the time of repentance. Allah accepts the repentance of the sincere, and "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'" The sacred hadith, "Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you," means that as long as you sin and then repent, I have forgiven you.
As for obsessive thoughts (waswasah), their cure lies in completely ignoring them and diverting one's mind, seeking refuge in Allah from Satan, and occupying oneself with learning, calling to Allah, and serving one's family and community.
