Is it permissible to give zakat to a 14-year-old boy whose mother is an orphan and whose father is alive and working but does not provide for him?
If a son has sufficient wealth or is able to earn a living, he is obligated to spend on himself, and it is not permissible to give him from zakat, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no share in it [zakat] for the rich, nor for the strong and able-bodied." However, if he does not possess what suffices him, his father is obligated to spend on him. If it is impossible to compel the father to do so, then it is permissible to spend on the son from zakat.
