Is it permissible for a mother to give Zakat on her money to her 33-year-old son whose work does not cover his basic needs?
If a son is poor and cannot find work to cover his basic expenses, his living, affluent father must give him what he needs to complete his expenditure. If the father is deceased or poor, then the mother is obligated to spend on him from her own wealth. However, she is not permitted to give him from her zakat unless he is in debt. Ibn Qudamah mentioned that a mother is obligated to provide for her child if he has no father, citing Allah's saying: (And behave kindly to parents), and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) hadith: "Your mother, then your mother, then your mother."
