Is it permissible to feed sixty poor people instead of fasting for the atonement of the deceased?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Feeding sixty poor people is neither valid nor sufficient as expiation for accidental killing if the killer is able to fast. The obligation is to fast for two consecutive months. Scholars have differed regarding one who is unable to fast: the majority of scholars hold that there is no feeding, whereas the Shafi'is and Hanbalis believe that one should feed sixty poor people, by analogy with the expiation for Zihar (a pre-Islamic form of divorce).
