Why is prostration (sajdah) frequent in Meccan surahs?

The prostrations of recitation (sujud al-tilawah) are derived from the actions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The scholars have not provided a reason why the majority of them appear in Makkan surahs. It is observed that the place of prostration in any surah is preceded by the word "sujud" (prostration), as in Surat al-A'raf: "and to Him they prostrate," and in Surat ar-Ra'd: "And to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and on the earth," and in Surat an-Nahl: "And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth."
