What is the wisdom behind Al-Tariq mentioning his name when asked about himself at the door?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, disliked Jabir’s, may Allah be pleased with him, saying, "Me" when he sought permission to enter upon him, because it does not inform the inquirer. Therefore, it is better for the one seeking permission to state his name. If he says, "I am so-and-so," there is no harm in that. It is permissible to identify oneself by one's kunya (agnomen) or description if the name is unknown, unless the owner of the house recognizes the voice of the one seeking permission.
