Is it permissible to marry the wife's maternal aunt from another mother?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible to combine a wife and her maternal aunt in one marriage, based on Allah's saying: "And that you take [in marriage] two sisters simultaneously, except for what has already occurred." This is also supported by the hadith in which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade marrying a woman concurrently with her paternal aunt or her maternal aunt. The rule of thumb is the prohibition of combining any two women who are related to each other such that if one of them were male, marriage between them would be forbidden. This prohibition is temporary and ceases upon the wife's death or her irrevocable divorce.
