If your father had an idol, would you break it?

A son must gently and kindly advise his father if the latter commits a reprehensible act. If that does not work, then a son's breaking of his father's idol or destroying prohibited images he owns is a matter of scholarly disagreement. Al-Ghazali permitted it as long as it does not harm the father, citing as evidence: "And We had certainly given Abraham his sound judgment before, and We were of him aware. When he said to his father and his people, 'What are these statues to which you are devoted?' He said, '[Your Lord is] rather the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify.' And by Allah, I will surely plot against your idols after you have turned your backs and gone away."
