What is the ruling on eating an owl?

Scholars differed concerning the permissibility of eating owls. Some, like the Hanafis and Malikis, permit it, citing the general permissibility of birds. Others, such as the Shafi'is and Hanbalis, do not permit it. Avoiding eating it is more preferable and better, to step out of the disagreement, especially if there is no necessity for it.
