Is memorizing hadith in Arabic equivalent to memorizing its translation into another language?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Those who are capable of Arabic should study and memorize the Prophetic Sunnah in its original language and wording, as it is the language of the religion and revelation. Furthermore, some of the Sunnah's phrases are intended and required verbatim, such as the adhkar (remembrances), and to preserve its multiple meanings that might be lost in translation. As for those who are unable to learn Arabic, memorizing the Sunnah in their own language is better for them, and there is no blame upon them for doing so.
