How does a person know that he is patient, and do weeping and a heavy heart contradict patience and indicate discontent?

A person's patience is known by their perseverance in obedience, their abstinence from disobedience, and their endurance of calamities. Patience is founded on four pillars: longing, apprehension, asceticism, and anticipation. Whoever longs for Paradise will abandon desires; whoever apprehends the Fire will avoid forbidden acts; whoever is ascetic regarding worldly life will belittle misfortunes; and whoever anticipates death will strive for good deeds. Crying and sadness of heart do not contradict patience, as long as there is no wailing or discontent with destiny. Discontent with destiny and a lack of acceptance of it are Islamically forbidden.
