Is distress and impatience contrary to patience, and how can one reach the level of contentment with what Allah has decreed?

Patience (sabr) is obligatory during calamities. It is the act of restraining oneself from deeds or words that indicate distress or objection to Allah’s decree. As for contentment (rida), it is a higher and desirable level, meaning that the heart does not feel pain from the calamity. Merely feeling distressed does not negate patience, as long as one does not object to Allah's decree. There is a higher degree than contentment, which is gratitude for the tribulation. These levels can be reached by reflecting on Allah's choice and goodness, the expiation of sins through tribulation, divine gentleness, the positive consequences of trials, and the greatness of the reward.
