What is the authenticity of the hadith narrated in Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari's Jami' al-Usul, number 2344, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, elevated [to the Prophet], that the supplication of the people of Yunus was: "O Living, O Self-Subsisting! O Living when there was no living! O Giver of life, O Bringer of death! O Possessor of majesty and honor!"?

It has not been reported that this hadith is مرفوع (traced back) to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Rather, it appears to be attributed to Abu Al-Jald, who was one of the preachers and narrators of stories. This story is mentioned in Tafsir al-Tabari, Zad al-Masir by Ibn al-Jawzi, and al-Durr al-Manthur by al-Suyuti, where Abu al-Jald stated that when the people of Yunus were overcome by punishment, they recited a supplication: "O Living when there was no living, and O Living, Giver of life to the dead, and O Living, there is no god but You," and the punishment was lifted from them. Al-Asbahani described Abu Al-Jald in Hilyat al-Awliya as being knowledgeable of the revealed books and the admonitions of the prophets, and devoted to remembrance (dhikr).
