Photography is permissible unless it displays something forbidden, such as a picture of a woman who is immodestly dressed. Similarly, books that use pictures for educational purposes have a relaxed ruling. As for books containing pictures, they fall into two categories: a category whose primary purpose is pictures, which are impermissible to buy or keep; and another category whose purpose is not the pictures themselves but rather the benefit derived from them, and there is no harm in acquiring these. As for the decrease in the reward for the inhabitants of a house that contains pictures, this is not correct. What is correct is that angels refrain from entering a house that contains a dog or a picture, and this applies to pictures that are forbidden by Islamic law.
