Photography is of two types: drawing by hand, which is haram (forbidden) and a major sin, and photography by machine (camera), concerning which there is a difference of opinion among later scholars. The more cautious approach is to refrain from it except out of necessity that removes any doubt. As for possessing images, three-dimensional images are forbidden by consensus, except for dolls for girls. As for two-dimensional images, they are of several types: those hung for veneration, remembrance, or decoration are forbidden. Those that are demeaned, like images on rugs and pillows, are permissible according to the majority of scholars. Images that are widespread, such as those on currency and the like, are permissible when there is no specific intention (for veneration or honor). Children's toys are an exception to the prohibition, but it is preferable to avoid toys with clear details like eyes and lips, which are common in modern toys, and to stick to the traditional types.
