Is it permissible for me to take money from a man who deals in usury?

The early Muslims (Salaf) differed on the issue of accepting gifts from those who deal in usury. Some permitted it, while others prohibited it. Some distinguished between those whose wealth was mostly unlawful, in which case it should be avoided, and those whose wealth was mostly lawful, in which case dealing with them is permissible. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) stated a rule: "What is forbidden due to its earning is forbidden only for the earner, not for one who acquires it through a permissible means," citing as evidence the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) acceptance of gifts from the Jews, who engaged in usury. It is permissible to accept gifts and to engage in buying and selling with those who deal in usury, unless there is a benefit in boycotting them. As for what is forbidden in itself—such as alcohol or stolen money—it is forbidden for both the taker and others.
