What are the narrations transmitted from the Companions and the Tabi'in, with connected chains of transmission, from Ibn al-Mundhir's Al-Awsat (The Middle Lexicon), regarding wiping over socks, or socks and sandals, or socks and leather slippers (khuffayn)?

We have not come across a book titled "Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat" by Ibn Al-Mundhir; rather, it is by Al-Tabarani. Ibn Al-Mundhir's book is "Al-Awsat min As-Sunan wal-Ijma' wal-Ikhtilaf."

It is reported in Al-Tirmidhi that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ablution and wiped over his socks and sandals. This is a hasan sahih (good and authentic) hadith. Sufyan Al-Thawri, Ibn Al-Mubarak, Al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq held this view. They said: One may wipe over the socks even if they are not sandals, provided they are thick. Al-Albani authenticated it.

Abu Dawud said: Ali ibn Abi Talib, Ibn Mas'ud, Al-Bara' ibn Azib, Anas ibn Malik, Sahl ibn Sa'd, and Amr ibn Hurayth wiped over their socks. This was also narrated from Umar ibn Al-Khattab and Ibn Abbas. Ibn Al-Qayyim mentioned that wiping over socks was narrated from nine Companions. Abu Dawud added three more, making a total of thirteen Companions who narrated this. The chains of narration for some of these reports have been traced and authenticated in hadith books.
