The Hanbalis stipulate for wiping over socks that it must be possible to walk continuously in them, meaning that they must stay firm on the feet and not fall off when walking, so that the obligatory part of the foot is not uncovered. It is not a condition for them to be made of leather. Wiping over socks has been reported from seven or eight of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and Ibn al-Mundhir said: from nine of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
