Is it permissible for an adult son to sleep next to his mother in the same bed?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded the separation of children in their beds when they reach ten years of age, as a precaution against the pitfalls of desire. This ruling also includes mothers and fathers, as Ibn Abidin stated in "Radd al-Muhtar" that it is forbidden for a child who has reached ten years of age to sleep with his mother or sister. Separation has two meanings: either each person has an independent bed, or they are in one bed but separate and not touching. The first meaning is more cautious. If they are compelled to share a bed, it is stipulated that there should be no touching, no nudity, and safety from temptation (fitna). If any of these conditions are not met, combining is forbidden, and separating the beds becomes obligatory.
