What is the religious ruling on a daughter cutting ties with her father who insulted and verbally abused her, after years of him being absent from her life and intermittently providing for her?

A father's harshness and mistreatment of his son is a sin, but it does not permit abandoning him or mistreating him in return. The father's right is immense, and his right to dutifulness and good companionship does not diminish, even if the parents are polytheists, as Allah Almighty says: "But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness." Therefore, one must be dutiful to the father and treat him well, for in that lies the pleasure of the Lord and entry into Paradise. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The father is the middle gate of Paradise."
