What is the meaning of the the word "Al-Hamd"?

"Hamd" (praise) in Arabic is the opposite of "dhamm" (blame). Scholars have offered various definitions for its meaning, but they all agree that it signifies commendation and praise. Ibn al-Qayyim defined it in "Badā’i‘ al-Fawā’id" as: "Informing about the good qualities of the praised one, accompanied by love, reverence, and glorification." If informing about good qualities is devoid of love, then it is mere praise and not "hamd."
