What is the evidence from the Qur’an or the authentic Sunnah that the door of repentance never closes? And does Safwan ibn Assal’s narration of all the hadiths of repentance mean that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) only said one hadith, even though the chains of transmission of all these hadiths are good? And what is the most authentic of these hadiths?

The door of repentance closes for an individual when the soul reaches the throat (at the onset of death). However, it remains open in this world until the sun rises from the west, at which point a soul's faith will not benefit it. Authentic hadiths have indicated that Allah accepts the repentance of His servant as long as the death rattle has not begun, and that He extends His hand at night and during the day to accept repentance until the sun rises from the west. When the sun rises from the west, the deeds of everyone will be sealed according to their state, and neither repentance nor righteous deeds will be accepted thereafter.
