Is it permissible for me to leave my work at the police station and disobey my superiors' orders to perform the Tarawih prayer in the nearby mosque?

A person's eagerness for the means of reward and forgiveness in Ramadan is commendable, but it should not lead to missing or compromising what is more important. If a person's work is related to security, it is not permissible for him to leave his work for a supererogatory act. One should not be keen on a supererogatory act at the expense of neglecting a duty. Tarawih prayers can be performed in parts at the workplace, or late at night at home, and the full reward may be written if Allah knows the sincerity of the intention. There is no sin in not performing Tarawih because it is a Sunnah, and if Allah knows from your intention that you would have performed it were it not for your work, then His grace is vast and He will reward you for your intention. Similarly, one should not seek closeness to Allah through a supererogatory act while neglecting a duty. Whoever neglects his home, his work, or his leadership is not considered rewarded but rather burdened with sin.
